Splitters Creek

Splitters Creek runs from west to east through Junortoun and empties into Axe Creek in Longlea. It is an important source of water for plants and animals of our home in the bush.

JCAG has undertaken an ecological assessment study of the health of Splitters Creek. Read more and access the final report here.

O’Keefe Rail Trail

The O’Keefe Rail Trail runs from Bendigo through Axedale to Heathcote (about 50km) along the former railway lines. It is relatively flat and passes through box-ironbark woodland, river and waterway reserves and farm land. The Trail is Junortoun’s linear park, a great place for walking, jogging or bike riding, and a terrific way to move safely from east to west in Junortoun.

JCAG recognises that the road crossing at McIvor Highway is a significant safety impediment to its use as a commuter route to Bendigo. Advocating for its removal is a priority action of JCAG.

Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail

The Friends of the Bendigo-Kilmore Rail Trail care for the O’Keefe Rail Trail and advocate for its continued improvement and extension from Heathcote to Wallan.

Gardening in Junortoun

What to grow in our clay soil and how to grow it

Junortoun soil is typically heavy clay with low nutrient levels. The plants that perform best in this soil are Australian native species. A local nursery can give you advice about a range of plants that can create and attractive garden environment to suit most tastes.

Fruit and vegetables often prefer more fertile, well-drained soils. Local gardeners have success by planting into developed soils in containers (pots), wicking beds, raised beds or garden beds to which compost (or manure) is added and which are protected from Eucalyptus feeder roots. Use of mulch is highly recommended.

What not to grow in our home in the bush (please)

We know they are hardy, but please do not plant agapanthus or gazanias in your garden in Junortoun. These plants have a high potential of spreading along streets and into neighbouring bushland, and becoming environmental weeds.
